The Triangle
>> 18 October, 2010
I was concocting ideas for my shirt design for Oh-Wheezers' 2nd Blogoversary but it wasn't easy because I wanted something that defines me and my blog. Oftentimes, I'm left blank in-front of the laptop or holding a pencil with a blank sheet of paper.
I did my research and settled for... a triangle :)
For obvious reasons, I have chosen the triangle because it's a unique shape for a shirt design 'cause if you think about it, we seldom or haven't seen anyone wearing this symbol. We always see the common such as the circle, stripes, checkered, wings, skulls, cute characters, and the never-ending statement shirts. I said, "I just gotta go for the triangle".
But would you believe I was careful for choosing the triangle?
It's a symbol mostly associated with magic. I fossicked the net for symbols that contains a triangle in it. I'm avoiding conflicts as much as possible to prevent stereotyping myself, disrespecting beliefs, and false impression, thus, creating confusion to the onlookers.
Anyway, the triangle is a fascinating shape, although, this is not my field of expertise so I'll copy and paste a portion from one of the sources about its meaning :)
~~
The triangle's meaning is associated with some keywords, such as: Harmony, Proportion, Ascension, Gender, Manifestation, Illumination, Integration, Subjectivity, and Culmination. This sort of versatility is what captures themes of magic, wonder and creativity in the triangle meaning.
None of the other basic shapes offer this kind of inherent duplicity. When we turn a square on its side, the symbol meaning remains the same. Same with the circle - rolling it around, it's still a circle.
But the triangle proposes mammoth (polar even) variables in meanings when tipped top from bottom. To wit:
These are just a few examples of how a simple shift of this symbol can offer huge variations in meaning. I invite you to contemplate these and other similarities, as I believe pondering these solidifies the symbolic experience the triangle symbol has to share.
Any discussion about triangle meaning cannot continue without connecting it with the number three. Indeed, the triangle meaning is inseparable from the number three.
All the mystic teachings incorporate the power of three within their folds. Three represents the union of the numbers prior to it (One and Two). Numerologically speaking, if One represents force, and Two represents an opening, then Three is the birthing of true wisdom.
Consider just a few time-honored triads proposed by esoteric triangles:
Waxing, Waning, Full
Spirit, Mind, Body
Father, Son, Holy Ghost
Mother, Father, Child
Past, Present, Future
Power, Intellect, Love
Creator, Destroyer, Sustainer
Creation, Preservation, Destruction
Thought, Feeling, Emotion
Mother, Maiden, Crone
Love, Truth, Wisdom
The symbolic idea here, is that the vertical side represents one aspect, the horizontal side another aspect and the hypotenuse is offspring of the combining sides. The combination of one and another produces a new form of being altogether (a child, as it were).
