Mount Mayon Infographics
>> 14 May, 2010
Last week, I've submitted my project for my Illustration class and I'm happy with the result. For three weeks, we were to make an infographic on distinct topics randomly picked from small pieces of folded paper handed-out by our professor.
Information graphics or infographics are visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics are used where complex information needs to be explained quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing, and education. They are also used extensively as tools by computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians to ease the process of developing and communicating conceptual information. [Source: Wikipedia]
We see these type of graphics everywhere and it guides us through images such as a green-shaded circle or a man and a woman with a line in between, we instantly know what these mean. It would be a hassle to read signs that says, "Green means Go" or "This way to the comfort room, near the telephone booth".
"Infographics are not an art, they are a conveyance of information." - quote from Patrick Winfield's blog entry.
Charts, graphs, maps, and timelines are good examples of Information Graphics but some of these require a certain level of understanding. Each symbol, arrow, text, and color shades harmonize to what idea is being given out.
Anyway, my project was about the Mayon Volcano.
Here is what it looks like:

This shows Mount Mayon's 48 historical eruptions from past to present. The list on the right shows the characteristics of the eruption.
The Design Process
This project was very challenging. There were tons of research work. I did find good ones but I had to eliminate some that doesn't contribute to the idea I was routing for.
Honestly, I have thought about 3 to 5 designs for the project but sticking to one wasn't that easy. But unexpectedly.. I woke up in the middle of the night, days before the deadline, surprised with a totally awesome idea I had.
Too much thinking huh? lols XD

I made this rough sketch after partially reading some of my research work. Oh look at that eruption and those symbols :p
I had to read it all, even the one's I stocked on my email XD

Let the tallying begin :)
In the end, the project was a success. I had fun. It was pure hardwork, sweat, and eyebags. I learned a lot.
I may want to create more Infographics in the future.
